David Oates will use original photographs from his family’s extensive collection to introduce you to people, places and events in the heart of Histon at the turn of the 20th century. Feasts, fires and festivities all happened against a background of now-disappeared cottages at the centre of village life.
David grew up in Histon opposite the Brook and the Green – a fascinating early playground and a big stimulus in wanting to learn about their origins and early history. After a career spent lecturing in Mathematics at the University of Exeter, he returned to the district and has spent the last five years making new discoveries about the landscape history and archaeology of Histon and Impington. He founded the Histon and Impington Archaeology Group, and led the ‘Big Dig’ in the villages in the summer of 2016. He is a regularly invited speaker on these and other historical and general subjects.
